HELP!
My camera is officially on it’s last leg! (I asked for a new one for Christmas, but Santa forgot – and now I’m getting desperate.)
I need your advice (looking at consumer reports is the worst chore I could ever imagine) – Can you help a girl out? Here’s my questions!
- WHAT SORT OF CAMERA DO YOU USE?
- DO YOU LIKE IT?
- IS IT EASY TO USE??? (read – I’m REALLLY simple when it comes to cameras – it has to be idiot proof)
- How much did it cost?
Phew – yes, I was yelling for those first few – I was stressed – I’m glad I got that all out!
If you notice, some of my pictures are SUPER SUPER DUPER yellow and grainy because the cameras about to kick it. I swear I’m not eating neon broccoli and taking a picture with wire mesh over it - it just looks that way in the picture!
Yesterday’s lunch makes it a week straight – spicy oatmeal!
For a snack – I popped a few pieces of the homepage peppermint fudge I made last night – I snapped a picture since you only got to see the top in the last post!
OOOOOOH BOY was it tasty!
Lunch – a salad as usual!
This time: broccoli, tomato, peppers, olives, onions, and chicken.
I really wanted something sweet after lunch, so I tried out the dried Pomelo that I bought Sunday at TJ’s….
LET ME TELL YOU – this stuff was rotten! Not rotten, as in spoiled, rotten as in YUCK! When you open the container, there is this werid skunky smell, that’s almost border-line chemical smelling. The only ingredients are pomelo and sugar, but YUCK YUCK AND YUCK. When I tried it (yes, I did put it in my mouth, after experiencing the smell I just described for you) – it tasted pretty much like it smelled. But with an odd hint of sweetness. The sweetness almost tricks you and makes you think you want to eat more. If you can get over the smell – maybe you’d like it. Anyone interested in this? If so – I’ll send it to you – YOU CAN HAVE IT! For free!
After that experience, I needed a real snack – so I went with some TJ’s greek yogurt, Kashi H2H, blackberries, and honey – THIS SNACK WAS RIGHT ON!

Now dinner…well…dinner was the best dish I’ve made in a long time. I can’t remember the last time I was so proud of how a dish turned out! I made my own version of one of Roni’s ideas that she made a while back: Turkey Taco Quinoa Stew!
Here’s what I did:
- Browned 1 package of lean turkey meat (93%) & as much onion as you would like
- Once the onion and meat are browned – add whatever vegetables to the pot that you would like – in my case, 1 can of pinto beans, 1 can of kidney beans, 1 can of corn, and some chopped up bell peppers
- Add 1 packet of taco seasoning to the veggie, turkey mixture – and make sure you coat all the vegetables really well
- Then, once all the meat and veggies are coated, add 1 can of diced tomatoes with chiles, and 1 can of broth (use whatever you have around)
- Add 1 cup of quinoa to the mixture
- Season according to your liking
- Bring the whole pot to a boil, then cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally
My two tricks for making this the best dish I’ve made in a while….
- I seasoned it – A LOT! I used plenty of cumin, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion salt, and Frank’s Red Hot
- I ran out of broth after I had filled the can 1/2 way (I just use one of the empty veggie cans to measure) – so instead of being bland and adding water as the rest of the liquid - I got CRAZY and added MERLOT! I’m telling you – that did the trick!
Here’s the finished product, I ate mine on a bed of shredded iceberg, topped with a little bit of cheese, and a dollop (such a funny word) of TJ’s greek yogurt.
SO.FREAKING.GOOD.
And then it was off to volleyball! My mom and brother came (how great is my family?) to watch me play – and they must be my good luck charm, beause I had the best game of all season, and was awarded the imaginary “game ball” by my team!
Hope you are having a good Wednesday!

Kodak!! Go for it!!
Eeek, too bad about the dried pomelo
Hooray for volleyball!! I used to play back in middle school
you need to try fresh pomelo. if you like grapefruit you will love it!
I just got a Casio Exilim EX-Z300 for Christmas and LOVE it! It’s got a 10.1 zoom and this great feature called “Best Shot.” You just push the button that says “BS” and you get a whole bunch of example pictures to choose from…portrait, family, pets, scenery, food, text, etc. You choose the one that is most similar to what you’re taking a picture of and the camera automatically sets all the parameters (flash, shutter speed, etc) for you. There’s also just an auto-flash option if you want to take a picture quickly without selecting best shot. The thing that I think would be great for the blog is this E-bay function that’s on it. There’s a setting that optimizes pictures for posting on E-bay, so it should work well for the blog too. The camera itself is small and easy to carry in my purse, but with a nice large screen. We paid $200 (on sale) for it from Best Buy with free shipping. Target’s regular price is $250, and they don’t price match electronics.
I have a Cannon Powershot SD870 IS
Yes it’s easy to use and it has a lot of features so you can get fancy if you want. No idea on price as it was a gift.
Fudge looks awesome!
mmmmmmmmmmmm this sounds super good! Bookmarking this recipe! My camera is super old so I can’t be of any help- good luck!
AKKKK sorry to hear that it was rotten!!!
Um, I’m using a Sony digital camera. Works great!
Your photos are a bit yellow
I am really enjoying my new Nikon CoolPix s210. It was really cheap like $130 or something. I highly suggest it!
Thanks for the info on the Trader Joe’s Pomelo. Another item I will avoid at TJ. =)
Ooh that fudge – dayum.
I use a Canon EOS Rebel and I love it! And I’m a total moron with technology!
* WHAT SORT OF CAMERA DO YOU USE? FujiFilm FinePix Z
* DO YOU LIKE IT? For the most part (it comes in a lot of colors including green – which is the one I have). The one problem I have is I haven’t figured out how to take evening food shots that aren’t blurry, it takes me a couple of tries but that could be my own fault.
* IS IT EASY TO USE??? I’d say it’s fairly easy!
* How much did it cost? I don’t remember – it was a gift, sorry!
I also previously had a Fuji that I loooooooved! Sorry about the TJs disappointment – get the PB pretzel pillows of love, they’ll make up for it ten fold
Congrats on the volleyball!
I have a Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS. It’s my first digital camera ever — I just got it for Christmas — and I love it. I don’t know anything about cameras and i’m generally not technologically gifted, but my pictures all keep coming out amazing because of this macro setting that’s soooo easy to use.
Mark has a canon of some sort. I like it ok, but I think I am kind of rough with it and may have broken it since moving here. Woops.
The stinky pomelo. That is just the sort of thing I would buy to try. They sound uh, interesting?
Glad you enjoyed your stew!
The BEST camera out there (in my opinion), a perfect combination of price, size and quality: Canon SD750 (or the newer SD 1000). There are so many great functions and the pictures are always high-quality. Good luck with the camera hunt!
ps- The fudge looks heavenly!
love your blog:)
Whoa! Your spicy oats look like they are glowing!! Your poor little camera! My camera is about 5 years old … an HP Photosmart … and has been a good camera for us. I’m not sure about any newer camera lines out there though. Good luck with your search!
i use a sony cybershot, and i really like it. but i’m looking to upgrade, so i’ll be interested in reading everyone else’s comment.
I have a Canon SD870IS…Its great! I love the big screen on the back too!
Your taco stew sounds SO AWESOME!!
